Prior to his retirement in 2010, David Leoce worked with the United States Treasury Department as a special agent, a role in which he investigated individuals and businesses involved in high-profile crimes. He received several awards and recognitions for his outstanding work as an agent and held a supervisory role late into his career. Each year the Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers (AWFS) holds a student competition called Fresh Wood. Open to full-time and part-time students in high school and college, this competition celebrates the newest generation of woodworkers and allows these youth to showcase their work in front of thousands of industry leaders and woodworking enthusiasts. The contest is divided into six categories, and the 2017 Best of Show winner took home a handcrafted trophy along with $1,000 in prize money.

The Fresh Wood competition takes place at the annual AWFS fair and is judged by seasoned carpenters and craftsmen. Additional details about the Fresh Wood competition are available at awfsfair.org.

A former special agent for the United States Department of the Treasury, David Leoce received specialized training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in Georgia. As a result of his training, David Leoce was equipped to conduct numerous federal investigations into crimes involving illegal drugs, tax violations, and money laundering.

For the last 46 years, the FLETC has provided career-long training for law enforcement professionals across numerous disciplines. As the largest provider of law enforcement training in the country, it focuses on the unique needs of specific agencies while concurrently conducting training for such things as firearms, driving, tactics, investigations, and legalities that apply to all disciplines. Departments from across the nation participate in training sessions either online or at one of seven different campuses.

The headquarters for the FLETC is located on the Glynco campus, on the northwestern edge of Brunswick, Georgia. The 1,600-acre campus includes classrooms, dormitories, and administration and logistical buildings. For training purposes, students will find 18 firearms ranges, driver training courses, a large physical technique facility, an explosives range, a mock port-of-entry, and a mock neighborhood for practice exercises.

The Glynco campus is located on land formerly occupied by the Glynco Naval Air Station that served as a base for the United States Navy’s fleet of airships. These airships, or blimps, patrolled coastal areas during World War II in search of German submarines.

As a former special agent with the United States Treasury Department, David Leoce specialized in cases involving money laundering, fraud, and tax violations and worked alongside government organizations such as the DEA, FBI, and local law enforcement agencies. Now retired, David Leoce enjoys watching films starring and directed by Clint Eastwood.

Despite recently turning 87 years old, Eastwood remains passionate about filmmaking. In August he traveled to Venice, Italy, to begin directing his latest film, The 15:17 To Paris, which details the real-life story of three Americans who stopped a terrorist attack on a Paris train in 2015 by attacking the gunman. Based on the non-fiction novel of the same title, the film will have a heightened sense of realism, as the three American heroes will play themselves.

Anthony Sadler, Spencer Stone, and Alek Skarlatos wrote the novel together after they successfully subdued the terrorist who opened fire on the Paris-bound train that carried over 500 passengers. The film will detail the events of that day, while child actors will also portray the men in flashback scenes as the film explores the character of each individual and why they reacted with heroism in the face of such grave danger. In addition to the three men, the film also stars Jenna Fischer and Judy Greer.

David Leoce served the United States as part of its Treasury Department for more than 30 years. David Leoce’s father is a veteran who served in World War II as part of the US Navy. This family history of service has given Mr. Leoce a great interest in World War II.

Despite the Allied victory in World War II, the US Navy was not initially prepared for the realities of modern naval warfare, especially in the Atlantic. German U-boats preyed upon American battleships. However, a battle group was quickly improvised to focus exclusively on the destruction of U-boats and improve the quality of American anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic.

In the Pacific, the Navy played a much greater role. Carrier-based aircraft and the ability to project force against Japanese fighters were essential to victory. Most of the American amphibious landing craft employed in World War II were used against Japanese islands, and more than two dozen new aircraft carriers were built before the war’s end. American submarines also played a critical part, with the US Navy. Among other strategies, a submarine blockade was able to cut-off the Japanese supply chain.
